About me

I am a pianist, chamber musician, researcher and educator. Classical music, especially chamber music, is my great passion. For me, it is a space for searching and artistic experiments as well as research projects. I believe that classical music can only inspire by inciting new ideas, destroying patterns, creating a new vision of a better world. Facing cultural diversity, different views and beliefs, music should be a space for creating dialogue, also intercultural one.

Education

I am a graduate of The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in the piano class. I continued my artistic education at the The University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, where I studied performance of solo and chamber music. I was a scholarship holder, inter alia, of Vienna International Pianists and the American Institute for Musical Studies.

Artistic activity

My artistic activities are carried out as part of several cooperations and creative partnerships, in collaboration with artists functioning in stylistically diverse musical and non-musical spaces. My numerous concert presentations include a wide repertoire for piano duo for four hands, for two pianos, for violin and piano, for piano trio, quartet, quintet and sextet, as well as voice and piano.

Together with the pianist Agata Hołdyk, I co-create the Ahha Piano Duo, the repertoire of which includes music from the baroque to the 21 th century. In 2017, our album “Our world of four hands” was released.

For many years, simultaneously with the life of a concerting chamber musician, I have been a dedicated teacher. I conducted classes in the main piano and chamber ensembles at The State Primary and Secondary Music School in Zabrze (2007-2011) and at The State Music Schools Complex in Żory (2007-2020). I also worked as an accompanist pianist at The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice (2007-2015). Currently, I conduct artistic and research activities at The University of Silesia.

In 2021, my monograph entitled “Transcription in chamber music as a space for piano interpretation” was published, which is fully dedicated to pianists working with instrumentalists. The subject matter of my monograph aroused the interest of the international body at the Annual Meeting at ECMT in Lisbon.

The issues explored by me were also used to create unique masterclasses dedicated to chamber ensembles for students of 1st and 2nd degree music schools, students of music academies and of other art faculties at universities in Poland and abroad.

„Dr. Aleksandra Hałat in all her artistic activities is guided by care for the preservation of our cultural heritage, and the repertoire choices she makes testify to her extensive knowledge; this outstanding pianist devotes a lot of attention to both the analysis of musical works and learning about their history and the context accompanying their creation.”

Bands

I founded the chamber ensemble Hałat Duo with Marcin Hałat and the piano duo Ahha Piano Duo, which I co-create with Agata Hołdyk.

In 2019, Karol Rathaus Ensemble was founded, which I create with Piotr Lato, Marcin Mączyński and Marcin Hałat.

Karol Rathaus

In 2019, I started the implementation of the extensive and multi-stage Karol Rathaus Project, the idea of which is to popularize and promote the work of the outstanding Polish composer in exile Karol Rathaus (1985-1954) through recordings, publications, lectures and concerts.

Basing this on the composer’s manuscripts, I recorded together with the members of The Karol Rathaus Ensemble an extensive chamber repertoire of Karol Rathaus, which constitutes a series of world phonographic premieres “Karol Rathaus – Piano Trios” (2020) and “Karol Rathaus – Chamberworks” (2021). Both albums were released by DUX label and the project partners were: Ruch Muzyczny, Polish Radio Two, TVP Kultura, Presto, polmic.pl, the University of Silesia, Exil Arte Zentrum, Henri Selmer Paris and Long Play.

In 2022, I started the “Integration Chamber Music Concerts” tour, which included a series of concerts in Poland, Scotland, and the United States, during which I presented the works of Polish emigration artists to Polish and foreign audiences, with particular focus on the works by Karol Rathaus.

Thanks to the activities of The Karol Rathaus Project, K. Rathaus’s artistic output gains memory, interest, and begins to be included in concert programs in Poland and abroad, as well as in competition programs, an example of which is The Polish Music Competition.

In 2021, I founded The Karol Rathaus Foundation, the activity of which focuses on promoting the work of Karol Rathaus, supporting young composers in the field of composition and performers, as well as implementing innovative educational projects to disseminate classical music.
